Backing Up… It’s A Big Deal

‘…Oh, No, I haven’t backed up my hard-drive and my computer crashed!

Do you know how many times that statement is said? Amazingly, people know backing up is so important, yet more often than not they never get around to making that backup copy…all those important documents and pictures. In the blink of an eye, all the files can be lost. Yet when you think about it, backing up a computer system is not as pain staking as it once was. Yes, at one time, we backed up on floppy drives which were sufficient then…but imagine that today!

Some of the older methods for backing up were cumbersome, with devices like the zip drive. Zipping files use to require a special zip program, special discs and a separate drive. Not only was this time consuming, but it was troublesome to have to zip and unzip files. No wonder people did not backup as they should back then. Today new operating systems enable zipping and unzipping without special equipment, but it still requires more time than just copying files.

Another form of backing up was using a separate hard drive that was installed in a special case and sat on your desk. Although this method is great for the amount of storage space one gains, the size is inconvenient for transport plus backup hard drives can now be pricey.

So does all of this mean there is no perfect way to make a backup of all your important docs? Absolutely not! The answer to the perfect backup is the flash drive. Available today at a fraction of the cost, flash (or thumb) drives are convenient, plug-n-play, easy to transport, and can hold up to 64GB of information. That is quite a lot of room for a small handheld drive.

So there really is no reason why you should not backup; it only takes a few minutes and it is very simple. Many PCs today have USBs right on the front. All you need is to plug the flash drive into your computer’s USB port. The flash drive, once recognized by the computer, typically becomes the next available letter after the hard-drive (C) and the CD (D) and DVD (E) Drive.

Once installed, look for an F or G drive in My Computer. Backing up is simpler than copy and paste…open Explorer and find your documents on your hard drive. On the right, highlight all those files that are important to you and once highlighted, drag them over to the flash drive location and let go. All those files will miraculously be copied over to the new backup location and still intact on your hard-drive. Plus it is equally as easy to retrieve one of those files; simply locate the drive letter in Explorer and scroll until you see the desired file.
