VIRUSES
A virus is a software program that is quite similar to an organic health virus, but instead of being airborne, it is spread via the Internet. Then once in your PC, it will reproduce and spread to other computers via e-mail, flash drives, and shared files. There are many viruses today and way too many to discuss in this post, so we will limit this discussion to the main and likely the worst virus most people have heard about called a Trojan Horse.

A Trojan virus is a computer program containing a hidden function that causes damage to other programs while appearing to perform a valid function. The Trojan deceptively depicts itself as a safe software program which wrongly informs you that your computer has been infected with Trojan viruses and then claims that if you purchase their software. The image here is one that is well known called ‘Internet Antivirus Pro’ (see screenshot) internet antivirus 300x221 Viruses, Adware, Spyware, Malwarethat tells you you’ll receive the necessary tools to fix your computer…Right? Wrong…this bogus software is in fact the villain that infected your computer in the first place.  Internet Antivirus Pro is online fraud and a computer parasite. It spreads through software exploits (usually via web browser vulnerabilities), but it may also trick people into downloading this useless software manually. Once downloaded, this culprit is hard to remove. Bottom line… the Trojan Horse virus must be removed. If you have antivirus software, run it right away. If you don’t have antivirus software you should go online immediately to download an anti-virus program. Look below at  the recommended AVG and if you can, click the download link to install it as soon as possible.  In some cases you might find that the virus is preventing you from opening your browser.

There are many good reasons why it is so important for all computer owners (especially if you go on the Internet) to install antivirus protection BEFORE THE CHANCE OF INFECTION. Although there are many programs on the market one of the most widely used and comes with Pit-Master’s recommendation is AVG Virus Protection.

ADWARE
Software that is unknowingly installed on your computer to show you advertisements. Adware are software that display unsolicited advertisements, that pop-up at occasional intervals and unnecessarily pester the user. Some adware are also types of spyware, especially when they interpret the user’s web surfing history and send pertinent promotions only. Adware also reports a user’s website visits with data collected and used for ad brands selected to be directed at the user.

The objective of adware creators is not to harm, but adware can be annoying with ongoing pop ups. Adware distributing companies make money from their adware, or why else would they participate.adaware.free 123x150 Viruses, Adware, Spyware, Malware

SPYWARE
Software illegally installed on your computer to spy on you and report this data to people willing to pay for it. Spyware generally applies to privacy invading software. Spyware is a for-profit malware that is encrypted to track users’ Internet habits and display unwanted announcements, with the purpose of forwarding users to other sites, making money for the spyware creator. Spyware is not spread like viruses; they are installed on a computer through security loopholes and operating system defects. They can also come in bundles with other friendly software and then, undetected, get activated on the user’s computer when the software is installed.

Spyware is then slyly installed on PCs to acquire the users’ information and in some cases can interfere with the user’s control on the computer by installing new software that redirects the user to another site. They are capable of redirecting search engine results pages to paid advertisements. Spyware can effect a change in computer settings and result in slow Internet connection speed, loss of Internet functionality and changes in home page settings as well.

Their dangers include unwanted and erratic computer behavior, unwanted CPU activity, additional usage of memory and an unnecessary increase in network traffic, along with problems like application freezing, booting failures, system-wide crashes, etc.

The Pit Master highly recommends a FREE program called Spybot Search and Destroy. sbsdlogo1 Viruses, Adware, Spyware, Malware There is no official website so the best place to get your copy is at Safer Networking. MALWARE
…or malicious code comes from two words, malicious and software. Although originally intended to be inoffensive jokes, malware has evolved into an intrusion of an unsuspecting person’s computer system via the Internet.

Malware’s effect on the unaware user’s PC includes taking control of the system undetected while generating an automatic sending of email spam. Certain emails promote iPads and HDTVs while others may try to trick the user with tempting offers from UPS, FedEx, FBI or even the IRS. If a user visits a website where malware is attached, the user becomes infected once the site is entered. The malware is so notorious that it can even invade the computer’s hard drive causing an eventual loss of data.

So why do people still fall for this stuff? Well, virtual villains have become are very convincing making their cons look real, so it can be hard to tell at first glance that it is malware. It appears that the spam it is promoting is an actual product meant to lure people to open. Imagine this as an example of how unsuspecting a malware can be:

Scenario #1: You ordered an item over the Internet from a reputable company that you do business with often. The order is typically delivered UPS. The next morning with your Fake UPS Delivery Notifications Spread Scareware 2 150x150 Viruses, Adware, Spyware, Malwarecoffee you are checking email and there it is…a subject heading: ‘United Parcel Service notification #4709123’ – without thinking, you click on it….

The email body contains a message that reads:

“Parcel notification. The parcel was sent to your home adress [sic.]. And it will arrive within 3 buisness [sic.] days. More information and the parcel tracking number are in the attachment. Thank you.”
The Reality: a UPS_Document.zip is attached which contains a form of malware with a program that poses as a fake security application, with bogus security alerts that claim your PC is infected. The rogue is intended to convince you to buy a license for a program on the pretense that it will clean the fictitious infection on your PC. They may even use a phony UPS logo.

Malware is huge and malware is lethal. Your computer is constantly at risk from infection by malware including viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkits, dialers and spyware. Pit-Master recommends a program that specializes in fighting malware.

If viruses are a disruption, malware is havoc. Malware doesn’t just want to disrupt your network; it wants your personal login and password information, your email address book, and obviously, you credit card information. Malware is not going away any time soon; it is growing, developing and forever evolving. Malware is becoming more difficult to detect, and even harder to remove.
